School Building Compliance

For Information

Following the recent tragic events at Grenfell Towers, the need to ensure that our school buildings are compliant with building regulations is of the utmost importance. We need to ensure that each school site is and continues to be compliant with statutory regulations for the building including its plant and equipment. We have designed a spreadsheet that you can use to record this information. Headteachers may wish to ask their caretakers/site manager or head of premises committee to complete the spreadsheet.

To this end the London Borough of Barnet, through the Building Services Team, is continuing to undertake the urgent audit of community school sites; VA, Free schools and Academies may also find the spreadsheet we will be sending out to schools a useful tool to enable the ongoing monitoring of their school's building compliance.

Within the next week, Headteachers will be sent a letter (with the spreadsheet attached) outlining the school’s responsibility with regard to statutory compliance, together with a schedule to complete and return to the Building Services Team.  Please give this letter your urgent attention. If you have any queries, please contact who will be happy to help.

Schools Enagagment Event Reminder

For Information

We would like to invite you to attend a School’s Engagement Event on Wednesday 18 October 2017 at Hendon Town hall from 5.30pm for registration and refreshments. The session will start at 5.45pm (There are no parking restrictions around the Town Hall after 5.30pm).

Please RSVP by Wednesday 11 October 2017 to enable us to arrange catering as a light buffet will be provided.

The event has been designed to share our Youth Voice opportunities and wider engagement events which are available to your pupils (ages 11-18, up to 25 for young people with disabilities) and creating a working relationship between all schools and the Voice of the Child team at Barnet Council to support you in delivering youth participation opportunities within your school, for example School council. The session will also be a great chance to enable you to share best practice with other schools.

The event is for any member of staff, we ask that every school provides a minimum of one representative especially aimed at Head Teachers/ Deputy Heads, in addition to student Voice leads, school council co-ordinators, PHSE staff or anyone with an interest in youth voice or participation of your students within the wider community there is no maximum number of staff you can send.

The aim for the event is that it can deliver a one-stop-shop of all the forums and opportunities which are available to your pupils and how these can be linked to OFSTED’s criteria for ‘Raising Aspirations’ and the national curriculum, for example Citizenship and PSHE.

I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you on Wednesday 18 October. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any question or queries.
