LBB Schools GDPR briefing

For Information

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA). This is the biggest change in Data Protection law in 20 years and comes into effect on 25 May 2018, at which point all organisations should be fully GDPR compliant.

The GDPR emphasises accountability and individuals’ rights. Organisations must take action as current practices will not meet new legislation.

Following questions from a number of schools, the briefing note in the enclosures section is designed to clarify the position between schools and Barnet Council for GDPR compliance, highlight key areas likely to need work, and signpost to guidance and support.

Guidance for Teachers - Discussing Terrorism

For Information

As you may be aware, Darren Osborne was found guilty of murder and attempted murder following his attack outside a Mosque in Finsbury Park. Some students are questioning why he has been convicted of murder rather terrorism. Please share this information with staff and with pupils should you see fit, or should the question arise.

Darren Osborne was convicted of murder and attempted murder because those were the crimes he committed. The judge explained “murder is murder.” She went on to say “It is unnecessary for the prosecution to bring specific murder charges in this case because murder is murder, whether done for terror motives or some other motive.” In the judges sentencing several factors were taken into account, amongst these were the fact that the attack was premeditated and of a terrorist nature. The police and Crown Prosecution Service have made it clear, after his arrest and throughout his trial, that this was a terrorist attack. You can read more about the case here.

Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, the killers of Fusilier Lee Rigby in 2013 were also convicted of murder. This was also the case for Thomas Mair, the far-right terrorist who murdered MP Jo Cox. In all cases the charge has been murder but they were also terrorist acts.

Should you find it difficult to discuss these issues in class I have attached some guidance from the PSHE association that can also be found here You can also find some advice here. I am always happy to come into school to lead discussions, assemblies and lessons on these topics.

Prevent Education Officer
