Additional Places for Primary School Direct (salaried)

For Information

The National College for Teaching and Leadership recently announced the opportunity for School Direct lead schools to request additional places for Primary School Direct (salaried) for 2018/19. As outlined in the 2018 to 2019 ITT Allocations Methodology, Primary School Direct (salaried) is a fixed subject. In the methodology, they also advised that School Direct lead schools and ITT providers would be notified where any changes to allocations were planned. Primary School Direct (salaried) remains a fixed subject for 2018/19 but they are giving School Direct lead schools the opportunity to request more places. They are aware that a number of School Direct lead schools may wish to increase their Primary School Direct (salaried) allocation. For example:

  • A school may have applications from three good candidates but only have two allocated places. An additional place would enable the school to make an offer to the third applicant;
  • A School Direct partnership may have grown since their initial request for 2018/19 places;
  • A School Direct partnership has a steady volume of applicants and is likely to exceed their current allocation.

If you would like to request additional Primary School Direct (salaried) places for 2018/19, you will need to contact the National College for Teaching and Leadership with evidence that your current allocation is insufficient. The form in the Enclosures section should be used to outline your rationale.

They will review requests on a case-by-case basis. Approval of requests will be confirmed by the allocations team via email.

Assistant Director – Traded Services and Head of School Improvement

Safeguard Mnemonic

For Information

As some of you may be aware, within Barnet the SAFEGUARD mnemonic is the universal way in which vulnerability of young people is understood. This is especially the case for young people in which there are concerns regarding exploitation and missing.

This is a reminder that should your staff make referrals to MASH please can they reference within which areas of the mnemonic they have concerns for the young person. See enclousures section for Safeguarding mnemonic.

I am also happy to assist with any briefings and staff awareness and can be contacted on: Christopher.Kelly@Barnet.gov.uk

A number of young people have been referred to Prevent with extreme views. The Resilient Families Programme is an early intervention programme that aims to build resilience in young people and raise awareness for parents, staff and governors.

Please see the enclosures section for further information.

I am currently seeking early interest so am asking any schools who would like further information to please contact me and register your details. The offer is limited so please contact me on perryn.jasper@barnet.gov.uk or 020 8359 7371 as soon as possible.

Key Stage 1 and 2 Moderation Workshops

For Information

The timetable for moderation workshops is set out below. Year 2 and Year 6 teachers should bring copies of the relevant assessment frameworks, exemplification materials and anonymised photo-copies of collections of work (max 5 or 6 pieces of writing per child) – for a low, a middle and a high attainer who might potentially be WTS, EXS and GDS. These will be shared across groups, who will discuss and identify evidence against the PCS, supported by moderators.

We used this arrangement at the workshops earlier this term. It enabled teachers to discuss work freely and frankly, and generated more focussed discussion than at book-based workshops.

The workshops will include updates on the revised frameworks for the assessment of writing, with particular respect to GDS.

Please email john.paxton@barnet.gov.uk to book places.

Following an extensive service review and based on feedback from colleagues, we are now offering a variety of membership options and different levels of support which we hope will respond more effectively to our member schools' needs.

There are real benefits in taking part - developing this type of work does not only provide access to a range of funding opportunities and international CPD programmes, but can also have a huge impact on teaching and learning, curriculum delivery and raising standards and SMSC skills development in your school.
